Plain, unsweetened sparkling water is water with dissolved carbon dioxide. The clearest potential benefit comes when it replaces a sugar-sweetened drink; it is not a treatment and carbonation does not create special nutrients. The evidence below separates useful findings from common overclaims.
Hydration: what the trial actually found
In a randomized trial of 72 euhydrated men, cumulative urine output over four hours after sparkling water did not differ significantly from still water. This supports plain sparkling water as a short-term hydration option, but it does not prove that everyone will drink more or that it prevents every symptom attributed to dehydration. Sugar reduction depends on what you replace
Plain sparkling water contains no free sugar. Replacing a sweetened beverage reduces sugar and calories by the amount shown on that product label. It does not justify a fixed weight-loss prediction. Digestive effects: promising but limited evidence
A small randomized study followed 21 patients with functional dyspepsia and constipation for about 15 days and reported improvement in that specific group. The sample was too small to treat sparkling water as a general remedy. Carbonation can also cause belching or bloating in some people. Cuomo et al., 2002
Teeth: plain and flavored sparkling water are not equivalent
Carbonation makes water mildly acidic. Plain sparkling water is generally less erosive than soft drinks, while citrus flavoring and other acids can lower pH further. Frequency and contact time matter. The American Dental Association advises consuming acidic drinks with meals, rinsing with water and avoiding immediate brushing after an acidic drink. - Choose plain, unsweetened sparkling water most often.
- Do not hold or swish acidic drinks around the teeth.
- Ask a dentist for personal advice if you already have enamel erosion.
Bone health: do not confuse cola with carbonation
The Framingham observational study found an association between cola intake and lower bone mineral density in women, but found no significant association for non-cola carbonated beverages. Who should take individual advice?
Most people can include plain sparkling water as part of normal fluid intake. Reduce or stop it if it repeatedly triggers discomfort. People with persistent digestive symptoms, dental erosion, swallowing problems or a medically prescribed diet should follow advice from their clinician or dentist.
